Modern Video Games Modest Roots

Today’s video games actually came from experiments scientists did in the early 1950’s a scientist by the name of Higinbotham created a game called Pong. Pong was a simple game that played electronic tennis via the use of two dials. I think the majority of us can remember playing a game very similar to Pong on our old Atari game consoles.

In the next few years’ universities became interested in developing additional computer programs. Out of this goal a group of students from M.I.T developed a game called Space Wars. Space Wars was the precursor of the wildly popular video arcade game Space Invaders.

An interesting fact is M.I.T. shared this new program over a new communication program called ARPAnet. Arpanet was developed so the United States military could communicate in the event of the United Stated being bombed. This technology would latter be developed into what we know as the Internet today. As a matter of fact, with the Internet comes hundreds of sites one could visit that offer many free games online to play and download as an alternative to spending lots of money on costly video games and consoles.

A major issue with video games was the cost for the game and the console to play it on. It would take until the mid 1970’s to solve this problem. Atari is credited with brining the video game to the American consumer. By creating a newer version of Pong Atari was able to convince Sears to partner with them. The result was massive sales of over two hundred thousand units the first year. Many of these classic games paved the way for future video games to come with the exception of the graphics quality of course.

Today video games are a multi billion-dollar industry. With the further development of computers and the Internet gaming is reaching new levels and new consumers. Company like Sony, and Microsoft, are battling for market share with their Playstation and Xbox products. There are also hundreds of sites offering online games for free or minimal costs competing as well.

We will continue to see improvements in graphics and the speed of the games as computer processor speeds continue to improve. Get out there grab a joystick and have some fun. Happy gaming.
