Articles and Products of History Music in the 18th CenturyThe history of music starts with the beginning of mankind. There are ancient drums, which have been found that date back thousands of years. Music has been used for pleasure and work throughout history. The ancient Egyptians used drums to help time the slaves pulling massive boulders to build the pyramids. The slaves would pull every other drumbeat; this would help to make sure everyone pulled at the same time. The Vikings used drums for the sound help time the stokes of their paddles while traveling. This technique was also used to help synchronize the paddles to maximize the power transferred to the water. As the beat increased the rowers rowed faster. Due to the length of the voyages it was important to create a pace the men could maintain for many hours. As developments in leather, wood and metal work progressed many new musical instruments were developed. The ability to bend and shape wood and metals introduced the flute, violin and piano and harpsichord. Early composers were usually commissioned by the King to produce music for Balls and other get together. Composers such as Beethoven and Bach owe some of their success to these rich kings. As the centuries passed so did the styles of music. The early nineteen hundreds was very active with the form of music called big band being brought to the public. Big band music is usually played by a group of musicians. The term big band stands for exactly that a band with a large number of people. As the decades passed tastes in music changed again. The Beatles have
been credited with bringing Rock and Roll to America. Theses musicians preferred
guitars and amps on stage. Called the British
invasion the Beatles were literally an overnight success. Elvis Presley
is also created with helping the development of Rock and Roll. Referred
to as the King, Elvis still has thousands of fans worldwide. Recent developments in Music include the creation of Rap. Rap was developed as an outlet for inner city kids to vent their frustration with the authorities. Bands such as RUN DMC and LL Cool Jay led in the development.
