Articles and Products of History Internet: Early BeginningsWhat business has grown faster then any other in history? The Internet! Millions of people use the Internet daily to search for information and to buy and sell products and services. The future growth rate of the Internet looks to be very promising, but when was the Internet developed and who was responsible? As with many inventions the original purpose of the Internet was a military
application. The United States Department of Defense created an agency
called the Advanced Research Project Agency to oversee the project. A.R.P.A
later added Defense to the beginning of their name and is now known as
D.A.R.P.A. Some of the institutions involved in the early Internet were the University of Utah and UCLA. For the next twenty years the Internet stayed under the radar to the general public. The Internet was only being used by Universities and the Government. In 1989 the world changed. A gentleman named Tim Berners-Lee developed what is now referred to as the World Wide Web. Tim had developed a way to access the various computers on the internet using hyper links. These hyperlinks would help form the foundation for a company called Netscape. Marc Andreeson commercialized the Web by developing a graphical web browser. The significance of this was people could visually see the net and what information was available to them. As we all know Microsoft came into the picture and dominated the computer industry. The Microsoft Internet browser Explorer is currently the number one browser used in the world. There are some recent additions to the Internet browser world such as Firefox. In today's world most people can't go two days wtihout using the Internet. With chat rooms, blogging communities, e-commerce and more you can pretty much find everything you need right at your fingertips. Everyone has a website, ranging from cheap web hosting to robust dedicated hosting. One thing is sure, the Internet will continue to grow and be utilized by people around the world.
