Origin of Golf?

Where did golf come from? That is the disputed debate among nations. Golf like we know it today, came from Scotland. There are recorded references that King James II of Scotland put a ban on golf three different times. He said it was keeping his archers from their practice. However, the first known rules of the game came out of Edinburgh. The fact is, golf probably derived from other countries and stick and ball type of games.

The word “golf” comes from the Scottish word “goff.” That is derived from a medieval Dutch word “kolf.” This Dutch term means club. It is known that as far back as the 14th Century the Dutch were playing stick and ball games on ice. It is said that some of the balls that were used came from Holland. It is recorded back during the reign of Caesar that games using a ball and branches for clubs were being played. It is also recorded that Belgium and France had a similar game that was done cross-country. So, actually no one really knows where the concept of the game golf came from.

Scotland can say that they are the founding fathers in regards to the oldest golf course. Golf became an established game in Great Britain when James I started playing the game. The first golf course in North America is the Canada’s Royal Montreal Club. It was founded in 1873. The oldest club in the United States of America is St. Andrews. It was started in Yonkers, New York, in 1888. The United States Golf Association came to life in 1894. It is located in New Jersey.

So, while the debate rages on as to where golf actually came from, the fact remains that people love to play it, regardless of its parentage.
