History of England

Perhaps no country has as interesting history as merry old England. England as a whole has been at war for a majority of their history. Being an island country England was being invaded on an ongoing basis.

One of the first documented accounts of an invading Army happened in 1066. William of Normandy invaded England and defeated King Godwinson. Over the next few centuries the Normans battled the Saxons for control of the English countryside.

The Middle Ages in England were filled with War, corruption and deceit. The first king to try to unify the Normans and Saxons was Henry the first. Henry tried to bridge the differences between the two cultures but when his son was killed by an accidental shipwreck he believed it was the work of his rivals. This shipwreck was to haunt the English people for hundreds of years to come.

In the next three hundred years the wars among invading forces and the feudal barons continued. The king would grant land to the barons and then expect tax revenue from the land. In addition the king expected the barons to protect his property and not let it fall into the hands of invading armies. The barons began to turn on the King and demanded more land and a greater share of the tax revenue.

It was not until Henry II that the English governmental system switched from a Feudal Baron based system to the Monarchical state.

In the mid 1300’s England was to change forever. Bubonic plague spread across all of Europe. In 1349 it reached the shores of England. It is estimated that over one third of England population died due the epidemic

One of the most influential events in the history of England was the American Revolution. After the English effectively lost the war at the Battle of Saratoga they withdrew and the United States was first formed.

Today England is one of the worlds superpowers with one of the largest Naval fleets in the world. There economy is one of the largest in the world. But they still rank behind the US. Who knows if it was not for the battle of Saratoga we might be eating Fish and Chips instead of a Hamburger and Fries.
