History of Christmas

Christmas has been being celebrated for hundreds if not thousands of years. Most of us know the story of the child in the manger but what about earlier celebrations?

For many people the end of December signified a new beginning. This was partially due to the Winter Solstice. People would celebrate in the third week of December because the days were starting to get longer. The lives of early man depended on the elements and the seasons.

One of the more popular traditions was for fathers and sons to bring home a very large log. The log would be set on fire and as long as it was still burning the family would celebrate. This was one of the first Christmas dinners.

It was not until Christianity spread throughout the world that the actual holiday Christmas was created. As many of you know the story goes that Mary and Joseph were traveling and had to stop in a town called Bethlehem. The baby Jesus was born to the Virgin Mary on Christmas day.

Each year Christians around the world celebrate the birth of the baby Jesus with religious ceremonies and gift giving. It is thought that the gift giving is meant to represent the gifts from the wise men to the baby Jesus.

While there are many different religions practiced around the world, Christianity is one of the most popular. Each year millions of people buy gifts, Christmas trees and large amounts of food and drink to celebrate Christmas.

Who can forget waking up as a youngster to a decorated Christmas tree surrounded by presents. The visions of Santa Claus coming down the chimney still delight both the young and old child inside of each of us.

Next Decemeber 25th remember to not only celebrate the birth of Jesus, but to also give thanks for the many generations of people before you that have kept the Christmas tradition alive.
