Articles and Products of History Charlie Chaplin Charlie Chaplin was the beloved comic clown known to most as the Little Tramp. Charlie was born under sad circumstances in the year 1889. His mother was mentally ill and his father was a terrible alcoholic. His childhood was filled with the ups and downs to be expected when born poor and without reliable adults to care for you. Charlie’s father died when Charlie Chaplin was 12 and at the age of 14 his mother was readmitted to an asylum. Charlie decided to go it on his own rather than being send to an orphanage.
At the tender age of 9 Charlie Chaplin embarked on his acting career. By the age of 16 his reviews were quite good in some of the plays he had appeared in. At the age of 18 Charlie arrived in America and decided to stay. He decides to join Keystone Films and has no idea that he is about to alter his own life forever. With the introduction of his little tramp character Charle Chaplin becomes a star. In 1915 Charlie switches studios hoping to have more creative control over his work. He is disappointed to find that he cannot get the control he had hoped for. Charlie decides to switch to another studio. In desperation Charlie decides to build a studio so that he can oversee his own career. Charlie goes through many ups and downs in the following years, both financially and personally. Marriages seem to be a constant struggle for Charlie Chaplin, often marrying but never seeming to find the woman he desires. In 1919 Charlie began his production of The Kid. Finally he had a film that exploded into the cinema and was a success both financially and commercially. Charlie Chaplin went on the enjoy a successful career with a long line of critically acclaimed movies. The poor boy from London had finally made it. Further Reading
