Audrey Hepburn

Audrey Hepburn was born Edda van Heemstra Hepburn-Ruston in Brussels Belgium in 1929. Her childhood might have been blessed had her mother and her not been on vacation in the Netherlands when the Nazis invaded. Audrey and her mother were trapped there for the duration of World War II. Audrey suffered from malnutrition and saw relatives executed by the Nazis during that time. Once the war was over Audrey chose to study ballet in London.

Once again while on vacation, Audrey ended up being discovered and cast in the Broadway role of “Gigi”. With her natural beauty and her waif like physical demeanor, people were instantly charmed by this new actress to American soil and warmly received her. Her next starring role was in “Roman Holiday” with Gregory Peck. She received an Oscar for her work in that film. More hits followed, among them the classic “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. Her fifth Oscar came for the movie “Wait Until Dark”, a chilling story in which a blind woman is being stalked in her own home by an intruder. The end was said to be so frightening that during the last minutes of the film no one was allowed to enter the theater so they wouldn’t interrupt the tension of the viewers.

Audrey Hepburn had a long and satisfying career, but more and more as she got older she felt the undeniable urge to work for some of her favorite charities. While still maintaining her status as an actress, she generally reserved most appearances for public appearances like the Oscars. She did complete a few more movies during this time, but spent most of her time working on behalf of starving children. She became a spokesperson for Unicef, tirelessly trying to make the world aware of the fate of these children.

Audrey Hepburn died at the age of 63 of colon cancer. She leaves behind a legacy of an incredible actress, but more importantly she will be remembered as a true humanitarian.
