Articles and Products of History Amelia EarhartAmelia Earhart is the world’s most famous female aviator. In 1937, Amelia Earhart was attempting to set the record for the first female to fly around the world when she disappeared. Prior to this flight, Amelia Earhart had already set numerous records. She was the first woman to ever fly across the Atlantic, and she was also the first individual to fly solo from Hawaii to California. Amelia Earhart was a hero to many in the era when aviation was gripping the public’s attention.
Born in 1897, Amelia was raised by her grandparents until she was ten years old. She then went to live with her mother and father. Her childhood was greatly unsettled by numerous moves and the cloud of alcoholism that hovered over her family. As a child, Amelia Earhart was a tomboy. She enjoyed hunting, climbing trees and sledding in the snow. During World War I, Amelia Earhart was a nurse. It was during this time that she took her first airplane ride. Less than a week after her first ride, she was taking flying lessons. Within six months she had purchased her own airplane. She called it “The Canary,” as it was a yellow Kinner Airster. Within two years she broke the women’s altitude record. Amelia began breaking and setting new records. Her fame and popularity grew and she was soon caught up in a media frenzy as everyone wanted to know about this woman pilot. Amelia soon met and married publicist George Putnam. In 1937, Amelia Earhart was attempting to fly around the world when her plane disappeared. It was during the longest over water leg of her trip that her last transmissions were received. Despite searches, she was never found. Many speculations have surfaced as to what happened to Amelia Earhart. However, what truly happened on that flight will probably never be known. Further Reading
