29 May Rhode Island became the 13th original Colony to ratify the United States Constitution.

The first United States patent was issued to Samuel Hopkins for his method of making potash and pearlash. The patent was granted a term of 14 years and signed by President George Washington.

1791

14 July - Following a dinner celebrating the second anniversary of the Fall of the Bastille, an angry mob rioted in Birmingham, England. The main target of their wrath was the home, church, and laboratory of English chemist and theologian Joseph Priestly, who openly supported the American and French revolutions. Priestly and his family narrowly escaped with their lives.

The Old Farmers Almanac is published for the first time.

Paul Revere opens a foundry to cast cannon and bells

17 May The New York Stock Exchange was founded by brokers meeting under a tree located on what is now Wall Street.

1793

The Second Partition of Poland.

Reign of Terror in France (ends 1794)

24 June 1st republican constitution in France adopted

8 May Antoine Lavoisier, the father of modern chemistry, was executed on the guillotine during France's Reign of Terror.

5 June Congress passed the Neutrality Act, prohibiting Americans from enlisting in the service of a foreign power.

Jay's Treaty, A commerce and navigation treaty signed by United States and Great Britain.

Maximilien Robespierre was guillotined in Paris without a trial.

1795

Directory Rules France (to 1799)

8 June - Louis XVII, the Dauphin of France allegedly dies at the age of 10, of Tuberculosis. This touches of the debate of whether or not this was true. Finally resolved on April 19, 2000 with DNA test results announced.

3 August - Treaty of Greenville

The Third Partition of Poland.

Pinckney's Treaty signed by the United States and Spain, in which Spain recognizes the boundry Claims of the United States as per the 1783 Treaty.

British conquer Ceylon from Dutch

Washington's Farewell Address

The First Real Presidential Election in the United States

14 May English physician Edward Jenner administered the first vaccination against smallpox to an 8-year-old boy.

22 July General Moses Cleveland founds Cleveland Ohio.

1797

Treaty of Campo Formio signed by France and Austria after Napoleon's first campaign in Italy.

1798

The Pope was dethrowned from Political Power.

1799

Bonaparte invades Syria

Five nations unite against France

Consulate rules France (to 1804)

6 June American orator Patrick Henry died in Charlotte County, Va.
