Britain acquire Sierra Leone

16 April - The Contrast was the first play to be professionally performed in America.

14 May Delegates began gathering in Philadelphia for a convention to draw up the U.S. Constitution.

13 July - The Northwest Ordinance is passed by Congress.

1 January London's Daily Universal Register becomes the Times.

1 January Quakers in Pennsylvania emancipate their slaves.

23 May South Carolina became the eighth state to ratify the U. S. Constitution.

21 June The Ninth State, New Hampshire Ratifies the United States Constitution. Thus making this historic document the law of the land.

First convicts transported from Britain to Australia.

1 Jan. Georgia enters the Union by Ratfying the United States Constitution.

1789

George Washington elected the First President of the United States

30 April George Washington took office in New York as the first president of the United States.

May 5, 1789 - The French Revolution begins.

7 May The first inaugural ball was held in New York in honor of President and Mrs. George Washington.

17 June The Third Estate in France declared itself a national assembly, and undertook to frame a constitution.

26 August - The Rights of Man approved by the French National Assembly.

The planetary satellites of Saturn, Enceladus and Mimas were discovered by Herschel
