The Great Northern War (ends 1721)

King Charles II of Spain dies, setting the stage for the War of the Spanish Succession.

1701

23 May Captain William Kidd was hanged in London after he was convicted of piracy and murder.

24 July - Antoine Laumet de la Mothe Cadillac founded a French settlement between Lakes St. Clair and Erie. Located beside some straits, Cadillac appropriately named the settlement Fort Pontchartrain du Detroit, since "detroit" is French for straits.

Act of Settlement in Britain. This settlement establishes the Hanoverian Monarchy.

War of Spanish Succession (ends 1713)

Treaty of Methuen signed by Britain and Portugal.

Prince Elector Frederick III of Brandenburg crowns himself Frederick I ``King of Prussia".

Battle of Blenheim

Turkish Authority overthrown in Tunis

1707

Act of Union, Scotland and England become one country.

Death of Aurangzeb leads to the disintegration of the Mughal Empire.
