History Web Rings: An Alternate Form of Finding Information

by: Rick Brainard

Date: 03/18/04

One interesting phenomenon of the Internet is the different ways to find information that you need. One way is to use a search engine, like the one located on this site, and another is to bookmark the Web sites that you visit. Another way is by using Web rings.

There are thousands of rings out there, as we speak. Most are quality sites, covering a variety of topics from Science Fiction to history.

You can view a directory of rings available by pointing your browsers to the Yahoo! WebRing directory. This week we take a look at history web rings and how to join.

Definition

What is a web ring you ask? A web ring is a group of web sites that cover a theme or idea that connects to each other to form a community.

The Web Ring Organization defines a ring as, "member web sites have banded together to form their sites into linked circles. Their purpose: to allow more visitors to reach them quickly and easily."
