Encyclopedia of 18th Century History: An Invitation by Rick Brainard
The Encyclopιdie ou Dictionnaire raisonnι des sciences, des arts et des mιtiers, par une Sociιtι de Gens de lettres, edited and published by Denis Diderot, was a cooperative project. It contained articles discussing the advanced opinions of Voltaire, Montesquieu, D'Alembert and others about philosophy, politics and religion. It is considered the great intellectual achievement of the Enlightenment.
In this tradition, I am announcing a new project, the Encyclopedia of 18th Century History. If you have done research on a topic or individual within the 18th century, or just know something about the era, you can take part. I would like to invite you, the readers of this site, to contribute your knowledge to this new project. What is the Encyclopedia of 18th Century History? The Encyclopedia of 18th century History is a cooperative project that will include a series of pages with articles, facts, biographies and other information about the 18th century. Each entry will have further resources on the topic discussed, be it found on this Web site or other Web sites on the Internet. I have made it simple for you to contribute. I have put directions that are more detailed on a separate page, and also provided some online forms to gather the information. I have also included links to sample pages below. Your Name in PrintIf your entry is accepted for inclusion in the Encyclopedia of 18th Century History, you are welcome to include your real name or a nickname in the credit line. (For legal purposes, we ask that you include your real name when you submit the article and give us permission to reprint it online, but your real name will be on the article only if you indicate that it's okay to put it there.) You can also link your name or nickname to your email address if you'd like to hear from readers about your contribution, or you can link your credit line to your personal or professional Web site. This is a great opportunity to build traffic on your Web site. You can choose not to have any links in your credit line. When will the Encyclopedia be available? The Encyclopedia of 18th Century History will premiere in December 2001, with whatever entries are available, and will continue to grow as submissions come in. What will the entries look like? Here are a few sample entries.
- The Election of 1796
- The Turtle
- The Sons of Liberty
